The Grove Foundation initiated the Civic Engagement Program in 2016, in tandem with the expansion of the Foundation’s environment program. The two programs intentionally share the same geographic focus (California/Central Valley, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico). The goal of the Civic Engagement Program is to ensure a healthy democracy where everyone participates and the people leading the work are representative of the communities they serve.
This program supports progressive organizations who share The Grove Foundation’s values and are working to engage historically under-represented populations (people of color, youth, people of low income) in civic processes. In particular, the Foundation funds state and local infrastructure, capacity building, and effective organizations that:
-
Are collaboratives or organizations led or co-led by people of color
-
Are community-based and center equity
-
Increase civic engagement of underrepresented communities
